Annual Franciscan Poverty Program

The Franciscan Poverty Program located at the Church of the Transfiguration in Southfield,  has been in service to the community since 1961.  It quietly answers the call from people in need of food and emergency financial assistance to prevent interruption in utility services. It operates on donations made to the program and receives no financial support from Transfiguration Parish.  Prior to Michigan’s economic downturn, the Franciscan Poverty Program provided assistance to about thirty families per week or about 120 per month.  Staffed by volunteers, this year has seen a five fold increase in the number of people served each month.

During November and December, in addition to its ongoing weekly programs, the Franciscan Poverty Program provides Thanksgiving dinner for 350 families and an additional 400 dinners at Christmas along with gifts for nearly 1400 children. To help meet the needs of this program, Dr. Clark and Dr. Romzick sponsor a food and toy drive each fall to support the work of the Franciscan Poverty Program.  The office serves as a collection point and accepts donations of non-perishable groceries, toys for the Christmas season and monetary contributions.  The compassionate hearts and generosity of people never ceases to amaze the Doctors and their team as they transport cases of food and toys to Church of the Transfiguration where they are warmly welcomed by the dedicated volunteers.

Whether it is a few canned goods, a single toy or a couple of dollars, the program appreciates each contribution and provides the assurance that all items are distributed with dignity and care.

Mothers and Unborn Babies

Dr. Clark and Dr. Romzick have formed an alliance with this outreach program in Southfield to provide basic dental care for women who find themselves in a difficult pregnancy. Their effort is intended to reduce the risk of pre-term and low birthweight babies that can result from poor oral health. The mothers appreciate the care they receive, providing a healthy start for their newborn babies.

Donated Dental Services (Michigan DDS Program)

The Michigan Dental Association, Michigan Department of Community Health and many dental laboratories have combined resources to improve the healthcare of the most medically compromised and disabled individuals in our community. Each year the DDS program directs two patients to the office. They are provided basic care to restore optimum oral health at no charge. It is rewarding to see these individuals regain confidence that has been absent from their lives in recent years.

Michigan Day of Oral Health Outreach (MIDoor)

Dr. Clark and Dr. Romzick were part of the inaugural event on May 16, 2009 at U of D Mercy School of Dentistry. Along with about 100 other dentists, they provided emergency care intended to relieve pain or treat infection for people from the metro Detroit area who were otherwise unable to afford dental care. The Michigan Department of Community Health intends to offer this program on an annual basis. Dr. Clark and Dr. Romzick will continue to participate in this worthwhile program.
